Why You Might Need a Sinus Lift Before You Can Get Dental Implants

Sometimes certain preliminary procedures may need to be completed before you can qualify for dental implants. In particular, if you want to replace the molars or premolars in your upper jaw, you might have to undergo a procedure known as a sinus lift. To make sure you have all the information you need to make the right choices for your smile, here’s a closer look at what a sinus lift is, why it’s sometimes necessary, and how it works.

What Exactly is a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift is somewhat similar to a bone graft in that it involves adding grafting material to the jaw in order to ensure that there’s enough bone density for dental implants. However, a sinus lift is specifically performed on the upper jaw in the area near the back of the mouth where the molars and premolars are located. The procedure involves lifting up the floor of the sinus membrane in order to create room for the grafting material.

Why is a Sinus Lift Sometimes Needed Before Dental Implants?

The maxillary sinuses happen to be located very close to the upper jaw, and the layer of bone that keeps them separated tends to be quite thin. Consequently, there often isn’t enough room for dental implant placement in this area, and there could even be a risk of the implant posts penetrating the sinus cavity. But with a sinus lift, it’s possible to add bone height to the back of the upper jaw while also moving the sinus cavity out of the way. This helps ensure that your dental implants have all the room they need.

What is the Sinus Lift Process?

Before your sinus lift begins, a local anesthetic will be administered to numb your mouth. After that, an incision will be made in the gum tissue in the back part of your upper jaw. A small opening will be created in the bone, and the sinus membrane will be gently pushed upward. Then the grafting material will be placed in the space below the membrane. Once that’s done, the gum tissue will be sutured shut.

It generally takes several months for the grafting material to fully integrate with the jaw. Once it has, you will be ready to move forward with your dental implant surgery.

A sinus lift isn’t always necessary, but for some patients, it can be a crucial step for rebuilding their smiles. If your periodontist tells you that you need a sinus lift prior to getting dental implants, don’t hesitate to voice any questions or concerns you might have; it’s important to make sure that you have an accurate idea of what to expect.
